Child Support in North Carolina

Both parents are responsible for supporting a minor child in North Carolina. Either parent may be ordered to pay child support.

The following are a few of the factors that the court will consider.

  • The reasonable needs of the child including any special needs,
  • The condition and standard of living the child has had,
  • The income of both parents,
  • The number of children need support,
  • Child custody arrangements,
  • Other types of support provided to the child including medical expenses, health insurance coverage, and work-related daycare.
  • Prior obligations of the noncustodial parent pay child support or alimony,

How Is Child Support Calculated?

The North Carolina Child Support guidelines are used to determine support. Unless the parents have agreed to an amount other than the amount dictated by the official North Carolina Child Support guidelines, the guidelines will be used.

Child support is calculated using the Child Support Worksheet. The worksheet determines the child support obligation based on each spouse’s income and other factors such as taxes as well as retirement contributions.

Can Child Support Be Changed?

Child-support can be modified if the court determines that there is been a substantial change of circumstances since the entry of the existing child-support order. The parent who desires a modification must request a hearing. According to the guidelines the change must be 15% different than the existing child-support amount.
